The New 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-class

Having successfully updated its small-vehicle lineup with the new A-class and redesigned CLA sedan earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz is turning its attention to the entry-level luxury crossover segment. The new Mercedes-Benz GLA-class debuts as the front-wheel-drive GLA250, the all-wheel-drive GLA250 4Matic, and the sportier AMG GLA35.

Exterior updates to the new GLA-class crossover might, at first glance, seem minor. New LED lights and a single-louver grille are the most noticeable changes. Upon closer inspection, however, this GLA-class has a decidedly more SUV-like appearance than its predecessors.

MB smoothed-out the GLA's sharp edges, giving it less boxy, more refined look. The prominent grille is similar to the new 2020 CLA sedan, and the A-pillars are visibly less angled. It's overall height, and its wheelbase exceeds those of the former car--even though it's a touch shorter overall--and standard 18-inch wheels fit in tall, wide wheelhouses.

The GLA's interior is similar to its A-Class and CLA brethren. It includes the expected high-end features, starting with the new MBUX infotainment system. The system's centerpiece is a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster and a 7.0-inch touchscreen in the GLA250s and an 11.5-inch screen in the AMG. Both have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. When it comes to practicality, Mercedes says the new GLA gives rear occupants 4.72 more inches of legroom compared with the outgoing car. The rear seats can be adjusted for comfort as well. A power-opening liftgate is standard.

The standard GLA250 features front-wheel drive. 4Matic all-wheel-drive is optional. Although it's not meant for serious off-roading, the AWD models come with an Off-Road Engineering package, which automatically adjusts braking and throttle response for better traction on dirt or slippery roads.

Buyers can select the optional Driver Assistance Package to get forward collision warning (FCW). Blind-Spot Warning (BSW), adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane-keeping assist (LKA), and automatic emergency braking (AEB).

Every GLA-class model except the AMG is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that puts out 221 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. The AMG model gets a more powerful engine that yields 302 hp. The AMG also has a Speedshift dual-clutch transmission as well as suspension and brake upgrades, which gets it from 0 to 60 mph in five seconds flat. A plug-in hybrid model is scheduled to debut later.
