When Mercedes discontinued the R-Class in 2013, they had no idea the SUV market would take off in a matter of two years. As of late, buyers everywhere are opting for SUVs over midsize sedans and demand for the versatile, capable vehicles doesn't seem to be dying down. With this in mind, Mercedes is considering reentering the SUV segment once again in the near future, and a new R-Class could be just the vehicle to take on the competition.
The original Mercedes R-Class was introduced to the market in 2005. At the time, the world wasn't ready for the MPV, but with the SUV market now surging, it could be time to reintroduce the model. Mercedes-Benz Vice President Wolf-Dieter Kurz recently announced that Mercedes is taking a close look at the SUV segment. He mentioned the R-Class as the company's last model to enter the SUV market, and admitted its entrance may have been too early. The model, which is still being sold in China, is currently selling 12,000 to 14,000 units a year and could do well if it was brought back globally. However, the model would have to be tweaked to offer more off-road capabilities and would likely undergo a redesign before its reintroduction.
Right now, there is no official news as to whether or not the Mercedes R-Class will reemerge in the U.S. While you're waiting for confirmation, come by Elite Mercedes and view our 2015 models available now.
