It may have only debuted on the market four years ago, but the Mercedes-AMG's 5.5L V8 is already on the cusp of being put out to pasture. The beloved high-speed engine, which outputs an incredible 577 horsepower and 590 lb.-ft. of torque, is set to make two final appearances in upcoming models before being replaced by an all-new 4.0L twin-turbo V8.
The recent news regarding the fate of Mercedes-AMG's 5.5L V8 engine was reported on Autocar's website. According to the European automotive source, the 5.5L V8 will be phased out of the lineup after appearing in the soon-to-be-released GLE63 AMG and S63 AMG convertible. The outgoing V8 will be replaced by a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 with the ability to produce 503 horsepower and 479 lb.-ft. of torque. The smaller displacement, which is already equipped on the Mercedes-AMG GT, will also be outfitted on the upcoming, brand-new Mercedes-AMG C63.
The new engine may not be able to output the same amount of horsepower and torque as the 5.5L V8, but it will still produce first-class performance. It's also expected to deliver greater fuel economy ratings than the 5.5L V8, benefiting drivers who want to experience ultimate luxury and enjoy top-notch gas mileage.
