Uber is teaming up with Mercedes-Benz’s parent company Daimler to have the luxury automaker introduce and operate its own self-driving vehicles on Uber’s network. Already a popular mode of alternative transportation in the States, the company wants to expand – big time – by launching self-driving taxis all across the world.

Daimler was the first to jump on board, announcing plans for supply and operation of autonomous Mercedes-Benz vehicles on Uber’s network. The move is seen as a win-win for both companies. For Mercedes-Benz, the automaker will be able to further heighten its reputation as a leader in producing innovative vehicles. For Uber, the partnership means it won’t have to worry about investing in the expensive production of vehicles to grow its network.

“Auto manufacturers like Daimler are crucial to our strategy because Uber has no experience making cars—and in fact, making cars is really hard,” said Uber CEO Travis Kalanick. “This became very clear to me after I visited an auto manufacturing plant and saw how much effort goes into designing, testing and building cars.”
