The Mercedes-Benz lineup has increasingly been electrified in recent years, and other luxury models will join the current electrified car and SUV models. Mercedes-Benz has invested $1 billion toward a charging station infrastructure project to support its customers who have chosen to purchase an EV. The first of its 400 planned charging stations is now open in Atlanta.
The new facility was designed after initial renderings of the charging stations, which include a covered area to protect vehicles and owners from the elements. Under the canopy, which is illuminated by solar power, eight stalls are available with two plugs each. Select stalls that are handicap-accessible or suitable for tall commercial vehicles. From the street, a sign indicates when stalls are available. The lounge is swanky, with comfortable seating and vending machines. ChargePoint has provided the charging stalls and offers 400kW of power for fast charging. Notably, the stations support charging all models rather than only Mercedes-Benz EVs.
Mercedes-Benz has recognized the issue of faulty or broken charging stalls at some of the existing public stations, which has sometimes created stress for EV drivers. This has also prevented some drivers from buying their first EV. By investing in this massive infrastructure project, Mercedes-Benz is offering its customers and other EV drivers a true solution. Approximately half of the project’s cost will be covered by MN8 Energy. This is an initiative supported by Goldman Sachs Asset Management.
