For the first time ever, Mercedes-Benz has met the demanding UN-R157 legal requirements for a Level 3 system 1. In accordance with the technical approval regulation UN-R157, the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) has granted system permission for this to be marketed abroad, provided that national legislation enables it. As a result, customers in Germany will be able to buy an S-Class with Drive Pilot, which allows drivers to drive conditionally autonomously at speeds of up to 37 mph (60 km/h) in congested traffic on certain German highways.

How does Mercedes-Benz Automated Driving Work?

As early as the first half of 2022, the premium S-Class sedan will be able to drive in conditionally autonomous mode at speeds of up to 60 kilometers per hour in crowded regions equipped with the Drive Pilot system. When the car is in park mode, Mercedes says the driver may use the opportunity to buy online or write an email.

The system may take over driving if the driver chooses the Drive Pilot option. The controls are located on the steering wheel's left and right rims, above the thumb recesses. Even if you're eating your lunch or watching a movie, you may surf the Internet at the same time. The driver may rely on Drive Pilot's backup steering, braking, and electrical systems to keep the vehicle under control when anything goes wrong with the car's primary equipment.

Maintaining a safe distance and speed from the car ahead of it while staying inside the lane is possible with this system. Traffic signs and speed limits are recognized and obeyed by the technology. As the road conditions change, the automobile adapts by braking or avoiding obstacles or the evasive maneuvers of other vehicles.

In the event of an emergency, the driver will be able to grab the wheel at any moment. When necessary, the driver will assume control of the vehicle. The system will bring the car to a safe stop and display the danger warning lights if the driver does not reply to an urgent alarm. In addition to making an emergency call and unlocking doors and windows, this device provides easier access for emergency personnel.
