The G-Wagen has been a part of the Mercedes-Benz family since 1979, but that's just when production began, 40 years ago. The G-Wagen began in a post-war era Germany, where the need for a robust military vehicle and civilian car production was necessary. The G-Class is one of Mercedes' most legendary vehicles. The German automaker is celebrating that fact today by unveiling the 6th generation G-Class at this year's 2018 New York International Auto Show.
What's New for the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV?
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been around since 1979. It has long been the go-to vehicle for wealthy adventurers and those who have to look good on the way to their yachts. Now, for 2022, this iconic SUV is getting a thorough redesign. The new model features many updates that came with a 2019 refresh, including a new steering system and an independent suspension, but Mercedes has taken it to the next level this time. There are plenty of new standard features, including LED headlights and 20-inch wheels. Outwardly, this SUV looks much more elegant than before, but it maintains its boxy shape and upright stance. Perhaps most importantly, it's even more capable off-road than ever before.
Trims & Features
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class offers two trim levels. The G 550 and AMG G63. The G 550 is aluminum and steel, while the AMG G63 is aluminum. These two trims come with a full suite of active safety features and an airbag system. The G 550 comes standard with 18-inch wheels, while the AMG G63 comes standard with 20-inch wheels, which will also be available in an optional package.

Horsepower
The AMG G 63 includes a 577-hp V8 engine that generates 627 lb. ft. of torque, while the G 550 has a 449-hp V8 engine that creates 510 lb. ft. of torque. Both models have a nine-speed automatic transmission. All trim trims come standard with rear-wheel drive but are available with 4MATIC all-wheel drive to give you even more control on rough terrain or when driving on slippery roads in bad weather conditions.
Safety
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been around for over four decades, but the SUV has never been crash-tested because of its low sales volume. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration did not release safety ratings for the last version of the G-Class either. The 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV is expected to come with several driver aids, including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and more.
