Car Oil Types

How Many Engine Oil Types Are There?

Engine oil types can be categorized into four major groups. Each group of motor oil is designed to provide protection based upon several factors, including engine mileage, driving habits, age of the engine, and the area you drive in. Our expert service technicians can recommend the appropriate oil for specific requirements, and it is also beneficial to check with your owner's manual for suggestions.

Synthetic Engine Oil

Synthetic oil provides maximum engine protection and performance. Full synthetic oil offers superior protection against thermal breakdown with higher viscosity and better resistance to oil oxidation. In addition, the design of synthetic oil can help engine performance and has extra protection of oil sludge build-up.

Often synthetic oil is the more expensive oil option but is worth the additional cost. Older vehicles are ideal for synthetic oil and can benefit from extra protection. Synthetic oil is especially effective in environments that have extreme climate and temperature extremes from hot to cold weather.

Synthetic Motor Oil Blend

Synthetic blended motor oil is a blend of organic and synthetic oil and many special additives for engine protection. These additives combined with the unique blending of superior oils provide excellent protection against oil oxidation, among other engine benefits. The good news it is easy to switch from conventional oil to blended synthetic oils with many of the same benefits of synthetic oil but at a much lower cost.

Common Conventional Oil

The most common oil used is conventional engine oil, ideal for light-work vehicles with modest driving distances. In addition, conventional engine oil is best suited for basic, traditional engine designs with a moderate climate without extreme temperature changes.

High Mileage Engine Oil

Higher mileage oil is engineered to add extra protection for vehicles with 70,000 miles or more. The unique design for high mileage oil provides excellent protection with reduced emissions output and ultimately may reduce oil consumption. In addition, the special additives in high mileage oils help maintain seal flexibility to minimize oil leaks.
