A lot is made of how drivers can keep themselves and their passengers safe. However, if you're just a child, you probably won't be operating a vehicle. Instead, you'd be a passenger or perhaps a pedestrian still learning the concept of looking both ways before crossing the street. A collaboration between Mercedes-Benz USA and Safe Kids Worldwide has created a resource to help kids learn how to safely interact with vehicles.

Clifford Takes a Ride

Many generations of children have grown up reading books about a giant red dog named Clifford. In his latest adventure, he seeks to learn how to safely ride in a car and how to be aware of their presence before and after getting inside one. The book is part of the Driving Your Future initiative that seeks to teach kids about motor vehicle safety.

A Few Key Pedestrian Safety Tips

You can keep yourself and your kids safe by making sure to look both ways before crossing a street, even if you have a walk signal. This is always a good idea because you can't assume a car will obey a red light or other traffic signal. You also can't assume that a driver is going to see you in time to avoid a collision.

You should wear reflective tape, use a flashlight or wear clothing that is highly visible while walking at night or early in the morning. This can make it easier for drivers to see you and avoid a possible collision.

Finally, avoid distractions such as talking on the phone or listening to loud music. These steps make it easier to focus on what's going on around you, which can reduce the risk of an accident.

Staying Safe While in a Car

It's critical to always wear a safety belt while riding in a car. Kids younger than 12 should ride in the back and sit in a booster seat to provide the most protection in a crash. Passengers should refrain from talking to drivers or doing anything that might distract them.
